Canada Greener Homes Loan

Categories:

Rebate Name: Canada Greener Homes Loan

Update: The Canada Greener Homes Loan is closed to new applicants. October 1, 2025 was the last day to apply. Applications submitted by the deadline continue to be reviewed; submission does not guarantee approval or funding.

The Canada Greener Homes Loan offered interest-free financing of up to $40,000 over 10 years for eligible home-energy retrofits. This page describes the former program for historical reference and for homeowners with existing applications.

For a new project, review current HVAC rebates and confirm eligibility with the relevant program administrator before committing to work.

Historical Eligible Upgrades:

  • Heat Pumps: Qualifying air-source and ground-source systems, including cold-climate models, subject to the program’s equipment and installation requirements.
  • Furnaces: Ordinary standalone furnace replacements were not eligible for grid-connected Ottawa homes. Separate provisions applied to northern and off-grid communities.
  • Air Conditioners: Standalone air conditioners were not eligible. Qualifying heat-pump systems had separate eligibility requirements.
  • Renewable Energy Systems: Solar panels and related equipment.
  • Insulation Upgrades: Attic, wall, basement, and crawl space insulation.
  • Windows and Doors: ENERGY STAR® certified models.

Historical Loan Limit:

  • Up to $40,000 in interest-free loans per household.

Historical Qualification Criteria:

  1. Homeowner Status: You must own and reside in the home in Ottawa.
  2. Home Eligibility: Newly built homes six months old or less were ineligible; age was measured from first occupancy at the time of application.
  3. Pre-Retrofit Evaluation: Complete an EnerGuide home energy assessment before starting renovations.
  4. Eligible Upgrades: Implement recommended energy-efficient upgrades.
  5. Post-Retrofit Evaluation: Complete a follow-up EnerGuide assessment after renovations.
  6. Application Timing: A loan application had to be submitted before work began. NRCan strongly recommended waiting for a loan decision before starting work or signing binding contracts.

Application Status:

  • New applications: Closed. October 1, 2025 was the last day to apply.
  • Existing applications: Check your status with the program administrator. Homeowners with approved loans may continue their retrofit projects and funding requests.
