A local giveaway becomes a home upgrade

Home shows give us a chance to meet people outside the usual service appointment or installation visit. This year, one of those connections led from our show booth to Marleen’s home in Findlay Creek.

We supplied and installed the new heat pump to replace the home’s central air conditioner, while keeping the existing gas furnace as part of the system. The giveaway package also included an ecobee Premium smart thermostat.

Our directly employed technicians handled the installation. The photos below show our crew at Marleen’s home, working on the equipment that now provides central cooling and another source of heat for the household.

Why this upgrade includes a ProAir heat pump

The ProAir Arctic Pro heat pump provides central cooling and electric heating through compatible ducted equipment. Its variable-speed inverter compressor adjusts output as heating and cooling demand changes.

For this home, the useful change is the added heating capability. A conventional central air conditioner handles cooling. A heat pump can take over that cooling role and also supply heat, giving Marleen and her husband another way to warm their home.

The existing furnace remains part of that plan. This is a hybrid, or dual-fuel, setup: electric heat from the heat pump, with gas heating available from the furnace. It adds another heating option without requiring the household to move to an entirely electric system.

What keeping the furnace means in practice

Ottawa homeowners often ask whether adding a heat pump means removing their furnace. A compatible furnace can remain in a hybrid system, as it has in this installation.

In summer, the heat pump provides cooling. During heating season, it can supply electric heat when conditions and the home’s heating needs allow. The furnace is available when colder weather or the system’s controls call for gas heat. The changeover settings need to suit the equipment and the home.
