Why a Deeper Media Filter Can Be a Better Upgrade

A 1-inch filter and a 5-inch media filter can have similar front dimensions, but the deeper filter contains much more pleated material. If those pleats were unfolded, the larger filter would provide far more area for air to pass through.

That does not make every deep filter automatically correct. The cabinet still has to fit the return-air layout, seal properly and work within the equipment manufacturer's airflow requirements. When those details are handled correctly, a media cabinet is one of the most practical indoor air quality upgrades available for many forced-air homes.

MERV Ratings: Higher Is Not Automatically Better

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. The rating describes a filter's ability to capture particles across defined size ranges. A higher rating generally means finer particle capture, but it may also introduce more resistance if the filter and cabinet are not designed for the system.

Filter selection should consider blower capacity, duct design, filter dimensions, equipment instructions and household priorities. MERV also does not describe how well a product handles gases, odours or every indoor air quality concern.

Inspect the filter instead of relying only on the calendar.

Can an air filter be too restrictive for my HVAC system?

Yes. A filter with too much resistance can reduce airflow, increase blower workload and contribute to uneven comfort, overheating, frozen coils or longer run times. Filter efficiency must be considered together with filter surface area, cabinet design, ductwork and equipment requirements.

Does the furnace filter also work when the AC or heat pump runs?

Usually, yes. In a ducted system where the furnace or air handler blower circulates air for heating and cooling, the same return-air filter works whenever the blower operates. Ductless mini splits have separate filters inside each indoor head.

Do better air filters help with allergies and pet dander?

Upgraded filtration can reduce recirculating pollen, pet dander, dust and other airborne particles. Results depend on the filter, system runtime, air leakage, ventilation and sources inside the home. Filtration can be an important part of an indoor air quality plan, but it does not replace source control, cleaning or proper ventilation.

Why is my furnace filter turning black so quickly?
