Radon Remediation

Indoor Air Quality Solutions for Ottawa Homeowners

Keep Your Family Safe From Radon Gas

Radon is an odorless, invisible radioactive gas that is found underground in the greater Ottawa area. Radon occurs during the natural decay of uranium found in rocks and soil. This gas can seep into your home through your foundation / basement area.

Over time, homes that have high concentrations of Radon gasses can cause occupants to suffer from health risks.  This gas can cause people to experience respiratory issues and commonly leads to lung cancer.

Typically, if Radon gas is found in your home a remediation system is needed to remove the gas and ensure the safety of people living in the home.

AirZone HVAC Services is a leader in Radon Remediation Systems that are designed to reduce the amount of Radon to safe levels within the home.

Remediation System

A full home radon remediation system is the best method to ensure the toxic gas is being eliminated from your home. In houses that are displaying high levels of radon, our team of experts will evaluate your basement to determine the best way to remediate the home.

AirZone HVAC Services will install a fan powered system that utilizes negative pressure to suck the radon from the home and expel it to the outdoor environment. We custom design these systems for Ottawa homeowners.

This process includes creating a negative vacuum beneath your subfloor in the basement.  A large hole is cored through the subfloor and a radon remediation system is installed.

The system is a powerful fan attached to a large pipe that is installed into the subfloor.  This fan will then pull the radon gasses through a sealed system and push the gas to the outdoors, where it is diluted.

This type of system is the best way to bring the gasses down to acceptable levels.

Ventilation

For homes that have been tested and shown to have low-middle levels of radon, ventilation may be a solution that can remediate the gas to an acceptable level.  Ventilation devices such as HRVs and ERVs utilize a balanced ventilation fan to bring fresh air into the home while expelling stale indoor air to the outdoors.

AirZone HVAC Services carries a full line of HRV and ERV products that are perfect for Ottawa homes.

These systems will dilute the radon in the home for houses that have low/medium readings.  The advantage of this system is that it also adds many other indoor air quality advantages while remediating radon. Not only can we dilute the radon but we can also help eliminate other VOC’s, carbon dioxide and bring in fresh clean air.

At AirZone HVAC Services we have helped many people improve their indoor air quality with this method and have been able to eliminate multiple air quality issues with one device.  A ventilation device may not be the correct solution for all radon prone homes and does not replace a fully dedicated remediation system.

Sealing

An HVAC contractor can install ventilation devices and radon remediation systems but that does not guarantee that the gasses are completely eliminated. When radon is diluted and mixed in outdoor air, it is safe. When it is accumulated in a tight space, that is when the radon becomes dangerous. The only way for this gas to make it into your home is through cracks in the foundation, subfloor or other penetration points in your home. Ensuring that your basement is fully sealed is a very important step in ensuring your family is breathing clean and safe air.  Completely sealing your basement floor of cracks is a great start.

For homes that utilize sump pumps, covering these openings is another great way to make sure radon gas is not seeping into your home.  Furthermore, window casements and service pipe entries may pose risks for allowing the gas to make its way into your home.  As a homeowner you can complete most of this sealing yourself, if that is not something you are comfortable completing, there are contractors that are dedicated to insulation and sealing services.

How do I test my Ottawa home For Radon Gas?

Every single home has a certain amount of radon within its walls.  The Canadian government has an acceptable radon range of anything under 200 Bq per cubic meter.

In order to determine what level your home sits at, there are many quality testing devices available to homeowners.  Most local hardware stores will have short and long term tests available for purchase. Furthermore, there are dozens of reputable online retailers that offer affordable DIY tests.

We always recommend to complete a long term test and to ensure you are following the instructions on the tests packaging. We believe a long term test is the best method due to fluctuations within the home. Your radon levels will generally read higher in the winter than the summer.  This is because you are heating your home and this “stack affect” may cause more gasses to be pulled up.

If you are looking for reputable online tests, visit the Government of Canada website concerning radon.

Where Is Radon Commonly Found In Ottawa Homes?

Ottawa and specifically western Ottawa is an area that has elevated levels of radon gas. This is generally due to the fact that our homes are built on rock with higher levels of uranium deposits.
